Hotel Plaza Del Castillo Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Hotel Plaza Del Castillo in Campanillas, I’ll be honest — I wasn’t expecting much from this corner of Málaga. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you venture outside the obvious tourist zones. This four-star property sits quietly in a residential area that feels authentically Spanish, where locals actually live and work rather than just pose for Instagram photos.

Location & Neighborhood

Campanillas isn’t exactly the flashy Costa del Sol experience most people picture, but that’s actually its charm. You’re about 15 minutes from Málaga’s city center and maybe 20 from the airport — close enough to everything but far enough to escape the cruise ship crowds. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel with small bars where you can practice your Spanish and local shops that close for siesta. I mean, if you want authentic Andalusian life without the tourist markup, this is it.

The Room Experience

My room was surprisingly spacious for a mid-range hotel, with that clean, modern Spanish style that doesn’t try too hard. The air conditioning actually worked (not always a given in southern Spain), and the bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d wrestled with it all night. What I really appreciated was the attention to small details — good lighting for reading, enough outlets for all your devices, and a bathroom that felt updated rather than stuck in 1985. The furnishings were thoughtfully arranged to maximize comfort and functionality throughout the space.

Dining & Amenities

The breakfast situation here is honestly better than it needs to be. They do both continental and buffet options, and the coffee — well, it’s Spain, so of course the coffee is good. But they also had local pastries and fresh fruit that didn’t look like it had been sitting under heat lamps since dawn. The private parking is a real lifesaver too, especially if you’re planning day trips around Andalusia. Trust me, trying to find parking in Spanish cities can turn into an unexpected adventure you don’t want.

Why Guests Love It

There’s something to be said for a place that couples consistently rate highly — it means the hotel gets the balance right between comfort and romance without being overly fussy about it. The staff seems to understand that sometimes you want recommendations for the best local restaurant, and sometimes you just want to be left alone to enjoy your vacation. It’s that kind of thoughtful service that doesn’t feel scripted. Plus, the 8.1 rating reflects what I experienced: a solid, reliable stay that exceeded expectations without breaking the bank or trying to be something it’s not. The overall experience demonstrates why this property remains a favorite among discerning travelers seeking authentic Spanish hospitality.

Malaga’s hotels wrap travelers in beachfront hammocks, art-house cinemas, and concierge-led Caminito del Rey excursions.

They have 24/7 reception. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast had a lot of variety and it was delicious. We paid for breakfast 9€ each which was totally worth it. 15 minutes driving from the airport. Free parking outside.

The hotel is pretty, thematic and lovely decorated. It does give you a good feel when you walk in. Staff is AMAZING, every single person we dealt with was very helpful and cordial always with a smile on their faces. They have a lovely courtyard where you can sit to have a drink, coffee or just relax. Hotel is clean and very well kept, good comfortable beds and pillows and nice shower with plenty of toiletries.

  • Gareth from United Kingdom (9/10)

We arrived at Malaga Airport just as the city was sadly flooded. We were due to go to Sevilla by train the same afternoon but that was impossible as the station was flooded. We booked into this hotel as soon as we could and waited for a taxi. We phoned through and the staff were so helpful in ensuring we got there as easily as possible. They warned us that their restaurant had to close early due to the flooding (as had most of the airport) so we were able to eat before we arrived. When we finally got a taxi after 3hrs they were really welcoming and the staff had brought in food from home to allow the guests to have something to eat!
The hotel is really comfortable and clean, and our room was really quiet. So needed after a stressful few hours (although nothing compared with what the local population have gone through).
    Good value breakfast buffet.
